East St. Louis to Begin New Speed Radar System to Issue Traffic Tickets

March 25, 2014 – Word is spreading regarding East St. Louis’s use of a new speed radar system which will utilize a laser speed gun and video camera footage.  A police officer will review the footage and issue the traffic tickets.  These traffic tickets will not result in points, similar to the traffic tickets issued by other municipalities in Missouri when issuing red light camera traffic tickets.  East St. Louis is following the same protocol as the red light camera tickets – if the owner is not the at-fault party, he or she can petition the police department to transfer liability.

The same issues with the red light camera tickets may arise with these traffic tickets as well.  The major difference is that a police officer will be reviewing the traffic tickets and issuing them.  I will continue to monitor and research these traffic tickets regarding their validity.
