6 Things ER Doctors Wish You Would Avoid

Tarun is a cautious person (as would be expected from someone who sees injuries all day) so this headline and article caught his eye.  Here is a recap of each item as well as Tarun’s thoughts in blue:
  1. Crocs are not safe shoes – they have no traction or ankle support and the holes do not block dangerous objects, such as scissors. There are much more stylish and practical shoes to wear which can still be comfortable.
  2. Slicing avocados or bagels while holding them – this is the most frequent reason for ER visits involving cuts.  My wife does this all the time and HAS cut her hand while cutting an avocado but luckily not deep enough for stiches.  Instead of a knife for avocados, consider this tool and put the bagels DOWN and place on a board when cutting!
  3. Do not use trampolines – one ER doctor described them as “a broken-bone factory”.  I cannot add much more to this one – we receive calls (children and adults) about broken bones from trampolines and they are tough and painful cases.  Additionally, our January 2020 newsletter explains that you should really read the waiver you sign when going to a commercial trampoline park!
  4. Do not pet strange dogs.  I would add cats to this list considering a close family member (*cough* my wife *cough*) had to get rabies shots after petting a stray – it was a very expensive petting session.  We helped many clients with dog bite injuries (see September 2023 newsletter) because, unfortunately, some dogs are unsafe or can be protective of their owner.  Also, watch out for pets on the road and safely harness/crate your animals when traveling to avoid them getting loose.
  5. Do not ignore unexpected or extreme symptoms. It is natural to think about medical costs before seeking medical care, however, what may seem minor can quickly turn into something much more serious, whether it be a heart attack, stroke or even cancer.  If you have a bad feeling about it, just go to the doctor or the emergency room.
  6. Do not ride without a helmet.  We see so many bike crashes that I mostly avoid riding a bike in traffic (see our May 2021 newsletter regarding bike safety).  Injuries can range from broken bones to concussions, even with helmets (to get a concussion, you do not need physical contact.  The whipping backwards and forwards is enough to cause a concussion).  In general, it is best to get children in the habit of wearing helmets anytime they are on wheels, including bikes, scooters and skateboards.

Plane Crash = $30,000?

Recently, a Delta flight crash landed and then flipped upside down in Toronto.  While it was a miracle no one died or was seriously injured, the company quickly offered every passenger $30,000 with (allegedly) no strings attached.

It is commendable that Delta swiftly offered compensation rather than taking a no fault approach many corporations adopt.  However, at the office, we were all asking the same thing: “would you ever be able to fly again?”  In his closing arguments during jury trials, Tarun uses the phrase “waiting for the other shoe to drop” in the context of when someone is in a car crash, the person sometimes gets fearful that it will happen again (an explanation of where this idiom comes from was in our January 2020 Newsletter).  In that context, perhaps to someone who rarely travels by plane, $30,000 may seem like reasonable compensation.  But for those who travel more frequently, this could mean the person is limited and may never be able to visit their bucket list destinations.  Worse, if the person travels for work and now has crippling anxiety and is unable to travel, it could derail their whole career and $30,000 would not be reasonable compensation.

This story reminded us about the difficulties jurors have when determining what is reasonable compensation for an injured person’s damages, which include not only the pocketbook expenses (medical bills, property, lost wages – things for which we can get a receipt), but also the human damages (loss of mobility, inability to do certain enjoyable activities, being in constant pain).  This is simply a reminder that each person’s damages are different but, thankfully, our jury system allows a person to be able to tell their story and have 12 members from the community assess what is reasonable.

Just for Fun: Supporting Education

Tarun strongly supports organizations and charities whose mission focuses on education.  Often, education opens doors for children from all sorts of socioeconomic backgrounds that may otherwise have been closed.  That is why Rana Law Group supports many organizations trying to make a difference for children in our area.  Our recent educational charitable contributions were made to: Rosati-Kain Academy, Access Academies, Women in Charge and City Academy.

Recently, Tarun attended the City Academy trivia night as a corporate sponsor.  City Academy is a private school located in North St. Louis for ages 3 all the way through 6th grade where 100% of the students receive a scholarship to attend.  While his table did not end up winning, Rana Law Group is proud to be able to help them with their mission.  The theme was St. Louis pride and Tarun sported his Eckstein jersey along with a St. Louis Budweiser themed t-shirt.

Case Referrals

From time to time, clients call and ask which type of cases we handle.  Our practice is built on referrals from satisfied clients.  We know that if we work hard and do a good job for our clients, they will tell their friends about us.  The best compliment from a former client is that client entrusting us with the potential case of their friend or family.  Our office specializes in the following cases:

  1. Personal Injury (auto collisions, trucking, motorcycle, slip and fall, dog bites)
  2. Work Injuries
  3. Traffic tickets and DUI/DWI

If you know someone that meets these criteria, please have them call our office.  If someone does not quite fit the above criteria, please still have the prospective referral give us a call as we can usually help the person find the right attorney via a referral.
